If you’re looking for a 1:1 RC excavator, there’s some good news: they actually exist.
Full-size remote-controlled construction equipment is no longer just an engineering experiment. Volvo Construction Equipment offers a Short Range Remote Control system for EC250E, EC300E, and EC350E excavators, allowing operators to control the machines from up to around 100 meters away.
Of course, the idea isn’t to turn a real excavator into a giant RC toy. The main purpose is to keep operators away from hazardous areas, including sites with falling-object risks, unstable ground, rollover hazards, and certain dangerous demolition environments.
Volvo is not the only company using this kind of technology.
For example, during repairs at Regent’s Slide on California’s Highway 1, remotely operated Caterpillar bulldozers and excavators were used in areas with significant geological risks. This allowed operators to remain in safer locations while the machines entered areas where directly operating heavy equipment would have been too dangerous.
So yes, 1:1 RC excavators are real.
For most people, however, 1:14, 1:16, or 1:20 models are obviously much easier to fit in the garage.
Once the scale gets smaller, we move into the RC world most hobbyists are familiar with.
Volvo excavators, wheel loaders, and articulated haulers are all available as officially licensed scale RC models. Over the years, we’ve cataloged a range of Volvo RC construction machines at Wave-RC, from full-metal hydraulic excavators to electric excavators, wheel loaders, and A40G articulated haulers.
Several of the models discussed below are currently stocked in our U.S. warehouse. We’ll mention that once rather than turning the rest of the article into an inventory list.
Let’s start with the larger 1:14 scale machines.
1:14 Volvo EC160E Electric RC Excavator
The Volvo EC160E is particularly well suited to a scale model. Its tracks, cab, counterweight, boom, and working equipment all carry the distinctive appearance of a modern Volvo excavator.
We’ve cataloged a 1:14 Volvo EC160E electric RC excavator in this category.
The model is around 61 cm long and uses a substantial amount of metal and aluminum-alloy components. Compared with basic RC excavators that rely mostly on plastic gears, it uses a more robust mechanical drive system for travel and digging functions, while also supporting different working attachments.
In addition to the standard version, there is also a version with a sound system.
For hobbyists who want a more serious RC construction machine but are not ready to deal with hydraulic pumps, valves, oil lines, and hydraulic-fluid maintenance, an electric EC160E like this offers a much simpler route.
It still has a strong mechanical character, while remaining easier to use and maintain than a true hydraulic RC excavator.
1:14 Volvo EC160E Hydraulic RC Excavator
Take the same EC160E concept and move toward a much more complex mechanical system, and you arrive at the 1:14 Volvo EC160E hydraulic RC excavator.
The real-machine inspiration is still the Volvo EC160E, but internally, it is a very different machine.
This type of model uses an actual hydraulic system to control the boom, arm, and bucket, while making extensive use of metal components throughout the body, tracks, and working equipment.
Its appeal is not simply that it is more powerful.
For many hydraulic RC enthusiasts, the hydraulic system itself is part of the hobby. A pump creates pressure, valves control oil flow, and hydraulic cylinders move the boom, arm, and bucket. That operating principle is much closer to how a real excavator works.
This is also why comparing the electric and hydraulic EC160E versions is interesting.
They recreate the same Volvo construction machine, but the operating experience is completely different. The electric version relies mainly on mechanical drive systems, while the hydraulic version makes the hydraulic system itself part of the model experience.
That also means more maintenance. Hydraulic oil, hoses, pressure, pumps, and valves all require more attention, so this kind of machine generally makes more sense for hobbyists who already know why they want a hydraulic RC excavator.
From 1:14, we can scale things down a little further to 1:16.
1:16 Volvo L260H RC Wheel Loader
Among the Volvo RC construction machines we’ve cataloged, the 1:16 Volvo L260H RC wheel loader is particularly worth highlighting.
First of all, it’s finally not another excavator.
If you want to build an RC construction site with an actual workflow, excavators alone are not enough.
Excavators are good at digging material out of the ground, while wheel loaders are better suited to collecting loose material, moving it around, and loading it into dump trucks or articulated haulers.
That is exactly where the L260H fits in.
This is a 1:16 scale model of the Volvo L260H. The body is mainly ABS, while the bucket and boom use metal components. A screw-driven mechanism allows the bucket and boom to perform real loading and lifting operations rather than serving as decorative parts.
It also has one particularly important feature: articulated steering.
A normal car usually turns by steering its front wheels. A real wheel loader, however, turns through an articulated joint between the front and rear sections of the chassis.
So when the L260H turns, the entire machine visibly bends in the middle.
Combined with four-wheel drive and an oscillating structure, this gives the loader a much more construction-like movement over sand, dirt, and uneven surfaces than a typical RC car.
Its bucket can handle loose material as well, which means its job becomes very clear when used alongside an RC excavator:
The excavator digs. The wheel loader scoops, moves, and loads.
That is also why adding an L260H after already owning an excavator can change an RC construction setup more than simply buying another excavator with a similar role.
1:16 Volvo EC160E RC Excavator
If you still prefer excavators but feel that the larger 1:14 machines are too big or too heavy, the EC160E is also available in a more manageable size.
We’ve also cataloged a 1:16 Volvo EC160E RC excavator.
Compared with the 1:14 electric and hydraulic versions above, this 1:16 EC160E is noticeably lighter.
It uses an ABS body, while the drivetrain incorporates metal gears. A screw-driven system with metal reinforcement operates the working equipment.
It can still perform the core functions expected from an RC excavator, including digging, rotating, and driving, and it can also work with different attachments.
This highlights an important point:
Two RC models can both be based on the Volvo EC160E without belonging to the same class of product.
One can be a heavy 1:14 full-metal hydraulic machine, while another can be a simpler 1:16 electric model that is easier to use and maintain.
So when looking at Volvo RC construction equipment, the real-machine name is only part of the story. Scale, materials, and the working mechanism matter just as much.
Scale things down again, and we reach 1:20.
1:20 Volvo A40G Articulated Hauler
By the time we get to the 1:20 Volvo A40G RC articulated hauler, the scale number may be smaller, but the model does not suddenly become tiny.
The reason is simple:
The real Volvo A40G is enormous.
Even at 1:20 scale, this type of model can still be more than 50 cm long.
That is one of the interesting things about RC construction equipment: the scale ratio does not completely determine the final physical size. A huge mining or construction vehicle can still become a substantial RC model even at a smaller scale.
The A40G is also structurally very different from a conventional RC dump truck.
It uses six-wheel drive and turns through an articulated joint in the center of the chassis. An oscillating structure also helps it deal with uneven terrain.
The rear dump body can actually lift and unload material, giving the machine a very clear role on an RC construction site:
Transport.
At this point, the Volvo machines mentioned earlier can start working together.
The EC160E digs the material.
The L260H collects the loose material and loads it into the A40G.
The A40G carries it to another location and dumps it.
Individual RC construction machines then begin to form a real workflow:
Digging → Loading → Hauling → Dumping
That is one of the biggest differences between RC construction equipment and a typical RC car.
Real construction machines are designed to work together, and scale models can recreate that relationship surprisingly well.
How Should You Choose Volvo RC Construction Equipment?
If you only look at photos, choosing Volvo RC construction equipment can easily turn into a question of “which yellow construction machine should I get?”
In actual use, however, the differences are significant.
The 1:14 EC160E electric version focuses on metal mechanical construction and practical digging capability without requiring hydraulic-system maintenance.
The 1:14 EC160E hydraulic version moves into a more advanced hobby-grade category, where the hydraulic system itself becomes an important part of the experience.
The 1:16 EC160E is lighter and mechanically simpler, with fewer demands in terms of size and maintenance.
The 1:16 L260H, meanwhile, changes the type of work completely. Instead of digging, it focuses on scooping, moving, and loading material.
Then the 1:20 A40G changes the role again by focusing on transportation and dumping.
So moving from 1:14 to 1:20 is not simply a matter of “bigger means more professional” or “smaller means entry-level.”
The experience is really determined by a combination of scale, materials, mechanical system, and what the real machine was designed to do.
Where Can You Find Volvo RC Construction Equipment?
Volvo RC construction equipment is available through more than one type of seller.
Some common electric models can be found on large general marketplaces, while specialist RC stores tend to catalog a wider range of scales, mechanical systems, and different versions of the same real-world machine.

If you really want 1:1 scale, Volvo CE has already shown that full-size remote-controlled construction machines are very real, although they are mainly designed for professional construction work, hazardous environments, and industrial applications.
If you simply want to experience Volvo construction equipment in your backyard, sandbox, or RC construction site, scaling things down from 1:1 to 1:14, 1:16, or 1:20 makes life considerably easier.
At the very least, it should fit in the garage.
